SAINT LOUIS SCIENCE CENTER ACCREDITATION EXTENDED FIVE YEARS

Museum continues to meet high standards set by American Association of Museums' Accreditation Program

ST. LOUIS - The American Association of Museums (AAM) has extended the Saint Louis Science Center's accreditation for another five years.

The Science Center was initially accredited in 1989, re-accredited in 1995 and 2009, and with the extension, the Science Center is now accredited for 15 years.

The Science Center is one of only 779 museums nationwide to hold that distinction, though there are an estimated 17,500 museums across the United States open to the public. Only 31 of the accredited museums are science museums.

The accreditation process is a thorough, lengthy process, including a rigorous review from a Visiting Committee of Science Center peers and the AAM Accreditation Commission. Under review are the collections stewardship, facilities and risk management, institutional planning, mission and more. The entire review process can take as long as three years to complete.

Among the experts reviewing the museum was Bonnie Styles, Ph.D., AAM Accreditation Commission Chair and Director of the Illinois State Museum.

"The Saint Louis Science Center continues to show a commitment to excellence," Styles said. "Setting high standards and continually working to improve, the museum remains in a prestigious group of museums in the U.S."

According to Styles, the Science Center's accreditation extension is due, in part, to the continued high level of stewardship and management of its collections. Receiving the original accreditation signifies both quality and accountability in all aspects of the museum.

"We're pleased and proud to have the unsolicited accreditation extension," said Doug King, President and CEO of the Science Center. "Having gone through the accreditation process several times, we understand what an honor it is to be accredited by the American Association of Museums."

In addition to the other exemplary aspects of the museum, the Accreditation Commission also commended the Science Center for its YES program.

"The museum is a national leader in developing long-term programs for inner city youth which incorporate community partners," Styles said. "We applaud the museum for its achievements."

"I LOVE MY WIFE" EXPLORING THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION

NEW LINE OPENS ITS 20TH SEASON WITH THE ADULT JAZZ MUSICAL

ST. LOUIS, MO . . . The artists of New Line Theatre, "The Bad Boy of Musical Theatre," are very proud to announce the opening of the company's Twentieth Anniversary Season of provocative, adult, alternative musical theatre, with the hilarious Sexual Revolution jazz musical, I LOVE MY WIFE, running Sept. 30-October 23, 2010, at the Washington University South Campus Theatre (formerly CBC High School), 6501 Clayton Road, just east of Big Bend.

I LOVE MY WIFE is an intimate, little four-character concept musical, a naughty, wacky comedy about 1970s-era sex, love, romance, and wife-swapping, all set to a cool jazz score with songs like "Married Couple Seeks Married Couple," "Sexually Free," "By Threes," and the unashamedly romantic "I Love My Wife." It's a snapshot of two couples in 1977, toward the end of the Sexual Revolution, but it's also a character study of our country and our ongoing love-hate relationship with all things carnal. Hair announced the Sexual Revolution in full swing, and The Rocky Horror Show exposed its warts (no pun intended), but I Love My Wife shows us how it ended, not with a bang but with a whimper. The show explores the confusion of the Eisenhower generation -- too old to be hippies and too young to be old fogies -- as these would-be swingers sincerely attempt to try on the counterculture lifestyle, eventually leading all four into the same bed.

I Love My Wife boasts a great jazz score by Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity, City of Angels, Barnum, The Will Rogers Follies, The Life), and a smart, sly book and lyrics by Michael Stewart (Hello, Dolly, Barnum, Mack and Mabel), officially based on the French play Viens Chez-moi, J'Habite Chez une Copine (Come to My Place, I Live with My Girlfriend) by Luis Regio and Didier Kaminka, but the show really takes more (uncredited) inspiration from the iconic 1969 film Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice. For more info about the show, visit http://www.newlinetheatre.com/wifepage.html

The cast of New Line Theatre's production of I Love My Wife includes Sarah Armstrong (Monica), Emily Berry (Cleo), Todd Schaefer (Alvin), Jeffrey M. Wright (Wally), Zachary Allen Farmer (Harvey), Troy Turnipseed (Quentin), and Joel Hackbarth (Stanley). The show is directed by Scott Miller and Alison Helmer, with costumes by Thom Crain, scenic design by Todd Schaefer, and lighting by Kenneth Zinkl.

This production is part of the American Arts Experience festival, running October 1-17. More info about the festival is available at http://www.americanartsstl.org

New Line Theatre is a professional company dedicated to involving the people of the St. Louis region in the exploration and creation of daring, provocative, socially and politically relevant works of musical theatre. New Line was created back in 1991 at the vanguard of a new wave of nonprofit musical theatre just starting to take hold across the country. Miranda Lundskaer-Nielsen writes in her book Directors and the New Musical Drama, “After the pioneering efforts of theatre such as the Public Theater and Playwrights Horizons in New York, the idea of the serious nonprofit musical spread to theatres across America during the 1990s. While these shows met with varying levels of economic and critical success, the very existence of this alternative home for the art form began to redefine the musical, offering an alternative to both the traditional Broadway musical and the new West End shows. As the economics of the commercial theatre became increasingly forbidding, the nonprofit theatre became vital incubators for musical drama and nurtured a new generation of musical theatre writers.”

New Line has given birth to several world premiere musicals over the years and has brought back to life many shows that did not do well in their original New York productions. Altogether, New Line has produced 58 musicals and 5 concerts of theatre songs since 1991. New Line Theatre was recently given its own entry in the latest edition of the prestigious Cambridge Guide to American Theatre. New Line receives funding from the Regional Arts Commission, the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation, and the Missouri Arts Council. For more about New Line, go to www.newlinetheatre.com/contact.html

JOIN BO MATTHEWS “DAWG PACK” TEAM AT THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY’S “LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK”

All Team Members Receive A Commemorative Event “Bo-Danna”

ST. LOUIS – 92.3 WIL’s Bo Matthews wants YOU to join his “Dawg Pack” for the “Light The Night Walk” to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society!

Matthews is one of the St. Louis “celebrity walkers” for the Gateway Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2010 St. Louis walk event, taking place on Friday evening, September 24 at the Forest Park walk, located on the upper Muny parking lot.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) holds the Light The Night (LTN) Walk each Fall in approximately 240 communities across the United States and Canada, including two walks in the St. Louis area.  Participants carry illuminated balloons – white for survivors, red for supporters and gold to remember a loved one – to honor and commemorate lives touched by blood cancers.

This year the St. Louis area LLS walks will take place at both the upper Muny parking lot in Forest Park and at St. Peters City Centre Park in St. Charles County. The night’s festivities will include live entertainment and music, an appearance and LIVE broadcast from 2:00 until 7:00 pm by 92.3 WIL’s Bo Matthews (at the St. Louis walk location), plus fun activities for children and refreshments. The event kicks off at both locations with Registration beginning at 5:30 pm, with the actual Walk beginning at 7:30 pm.

Leukemia has hit home for WIL’s Matthews. His grandmother has been fighting the disease for the past three years. Matthews comments, "The hard work lands on the shoulders of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and those fighting for their lives. Participating in a walk like this can ease the burden of that fight."

As a part of his commitment to the LLS’ mission, Bo Matthews has formed a team for the 2010 walk event, called “Bo’s Dawg Pack”. For just $25, anyone can join his “Pack” and walk that night with Bo. All team members who register as one of the “Dawg Pack” will receive a commemorative “Bo-Danna” to wear at the “Light The Night Walk” event.

LTN Walk Campaign Manager and LLS Deputy Executive Director Cheryl Reale notes, “The Light The Night Walk events help build awareness and raise funds for the approximately 913,000 people in the United States living with a blood-related cancer. Last year, participants in Light The Night Walk raised more than $39 million nationwide.”

Reale adds, “With the help of 92.3 WIL, Bo Matthews and the St. Louis community, the Gateway Chapter hopes to surpass the $600,000 that was raised through the 2009 Light the Night Walk effort.”

For more information about The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the “Light The Night Walk” event, contact the local Gateway Chapter at (314) 878-0780 or visit the organization’s event web site at http://www.lightthenight.org/gat/.
