Sponsored by the Getty Museum Photographs Council on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of photography's invention, this all-day symposium will address the state of photography as it relates to Los Angeles during the past 25 years. Following a keynote lecture by George Baker (associate professor of art history, University of California, Los Angeles), a series of panel discussions will focus on teaching and studying photography in L.A., Southern California as a photographic subject, and critical perspectives on photography in L.A. Participants include photographers Matthew Brandt, Jo Ann Callis, John Divola, Robbert Flick, Harry Gamboa Jr., Catherine Opie, Alex Prager, Stephen Shore, and James Welling, curators Rebecca Morse, Jennifer Watts, and Colin Westerbeck, and critic Christopher Knight.

Jazz St. Louis launched the public phase of a $10M campaign to reimagine and expand the jazz experience in St. Louis’ Grand Center arts district. With commitments of $5.8M to-date, work is already underway at 3540 Washington Boulevard, adjacent to Jazz at the Bistro. The new larger facility will accommodate seating for 220,  add a lounge with additional seating for 75, greatly expand space for jazz education and provide room for Jazz St. Louis staff to reside in one location. Richard McDonnell Memorial Concert

Richard McDonnell Memorial Concert May 25, 2014 at Jazz at the Bistro

Jazz St. Louis is pleased to announce a memorial concert for Richard McDonnell at Jazz at the Bistro, Sunday, May 25, 2014. McDonnell, who passed away February 8, was a long-time board member of Jazz St. Louis and the owner of the MAXJAZZ record label, based in Webster Groves. This concert will feature a headlining performance by MAXJAZZ artists Terell Stafford, Bruce Barth, Tim Warfield, and Carla Cook, joined by St. Louis’s Montez Coleman and Bob DeBoo,starting at 7:00 PM. Many St. Louis-based artists, including Good 4 the Soul, Jesse Gannon, Cheryl Brown, Funky Butt Brass Band, the Gene Dobbs Bradford Blues Experience, the Phil Dunlap Quintet, and more, will be performing throughout the day, beginning at 1:00 PM, leading up to the headlining set. Brilliant Corners, the first band to record on the MAXJAZZ label, will also be performing. A full schedule will be announced Wednesday. The concerts are general admission, free, and open to the public. A suggested donation of $25 can be made at the door to Jazz St. Louis in honor of Rich McDonnell.

Island of Lemurs: Madagascar Now Showing at the Saint Louis Science Center

The incredible true story of the lemurs of Madagascar is told for the first time on the giant screen at the Saint Louis Science Center’s OMNIMAX^® Theater. IMAX^® and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Island of Lemurs: Madagascar is now showing. The film is narrated by Academy Award^® winner Morgan Freeman.



Island of Lemurs: Madagascar will take you to a remote and wondrous part of the world where these captivating primates first landed as castaways 60 million years ago, evolved into hundreds of species and now face extinction. You will see lemurs leap, sing and dance across the giant screen. You’ll meet the American scientist who is trying to protect and save them, a task more daunting each year as more of the rainforest is burned to clear land for farming. Island of Lemurs: Madagascar reunites Freeman with Drew Fellman, who also wrote and produced the 2011 IMAX 3D documentary spectacle Born To Be Wild 3D. David Douglas serves as director of the film.

Saint Louis Science Center Salutes Veterans On June 6, the 70th Anniversary of D-Day

On June 6, the Saint Louis Science Center will commemorate the 70^th anniversary of D-Day, the Normandy landings, with World War II soldier reenactors, military vehicles, displays by veterans’ organizations and special tributes to World War II veterans before each showing of the giant-screen film D-Day: Normandy 1944. In addition, military veterans will receive free admission to D-Day: Normandy 1944 on June 6 (and select dates listed below). Families and friends of military veterans will receive the military discount of $6.00, special pricing that is offered to our military and veterans every day of the year.

This is a unique opportunity for all Saint Louis Science Center visitors to meet veterans and hear their personal stories, including World War II veterans who took part in the storied Allied invasion and the battles fought in both the European and Pacific Theaters.

The Saint Louis Science Center is grateful for the support of all the veterans and volunteers participating in this special day of commemoration including the following organizations:
