Jeff Lorber Fusion featuring Jimmy Haslip & Eric Marienthal

“…Lorber [has the] remarkable capacity to bring musical authenticity to everything from bebop and lyrical balladry to sweet soul and some irresistible grooves.”– Los Angeles Times

In the late ‘70s, trailblazing keyboardist Jeff Lorber had become a prominent figure in the jazz fusion movement—marrying traditional jazz with elements of rock, R&B, funk, and other electric sounds. Now, the acclaimed group he started then—Jeff Lorber Fusion—is back, revisiting the revolutionary sound it helped pioneer, and bringing its combination of complex harmonies, unconventional time signatures, and compelling rhythms along. Both of Lorber’s band mates have had storied careers between Fusion’s initial run and this reunion, with bassist Jimmy Haslip being best known as the long-time bassist with the Yellowjackets and Eric Marienthal playing with the Chick Corea Elektric Band.
style: contemporary jazz / fusion

ST. LOUIS: Jerry Springer the Opera

ST. LOUIS, MO . . . New Line Theatre, “the bad boy of musical theatre,” continues its 24th season of adult, alternative musical theatre, with the St. Louis premiere of the outrageous JERRY SPRINGER THE OPERA, running March 5-28, 2015, at the Washington University South Campus Theatre, 6501 Clayton Road. This show contains very adult content and language.

The New Line season continues with one of New Line’s wildest and most ambitious projects, JERRY SPRINGER THE OPERA, the smash-hit, multi-award winning musical that ran to unprecedented rave reviews and standing ovations at the National Theatre in London, after a sold-out run in London’s West End. The Sunday Times called it “a shocking, irresistibly funny masterpiece.” With music by Richard Thomas, and book and lyrics by Thomas and Stewart Lee, this is an audacious, fearless piece of theatre that brilliantly and hilariously dissects the cultural forces that have kept Jerry Springer on the air all these years, the lives of quiet desperation that explode into public view in Springer’s weirdly nonjudgmental, national confessional.

The New Line cast includes Keith Thompson  (Jerry Springer), Matt Pentecost (Jonathan Wierus), Matt Hill (Steve Wilkos); and as Jerry’s guests, Zachary Allen Farmer, Ryan Foizey, Marshall Jennings, Lindsey Jones, Taylor Pietz, Christina Rios, Anna Skidis, and Luke Steingruby; and as Jerry’s studio audience (among other things), Reynaldo Arceno, Tyler Cheatem, Joel Hackbarth, Ann Hier, Sarah Porter, Michelle Sauer, Kimi Short, and Christopher Strawhun. Scott Miller directs the show, with music direction by Jeffrey Richard Carter, scenic and lighting design by Rob Lippert, and costume design by Sarah Porter.

There will also be a Springer talk-back, free and open to the public, on Tues. March 24, at 7:00 pm in the theatre, when the New Line design and production staff will take the stage to talk about their work and answer your questions!

Originally opening in 2003, Jerry Springer the Opera ran over 600 performances in London, before touring the UK. The production won four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, and it was the first show ever to win all four Best Musical awards in the UK (Olivier, Evening Standard, Critics’ Circle and What’s On Stage). The first North American performance was at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and it was performed by a number of American regional theatre companies, before making its New York debut in 2008 at Carnegie Hall.

The New York Times wrote, “Will it turn out that the great American musical of the early 21st century is an opera born in Britain? A convincing case for the rights to that title was made by the celestial Jerry Springer The Opera, the notorious show from London about the transcendent within tabloid television. . . Now ‘celestial’ might seem an ill-chosen adjective for a work devoted to the raw and nasty public doings of a throng of aspiring celebrities with dirty little secrets expressed in dirty little words. But this remarkable work – which features a spectacularly inventive score – uncovers something grand within the small, squalid lives it portrays.”

NEW LINE THEATRE SEEKS MULTI-RACIAL CAST FOR POP OPERA "BARE"

NEW LINE THEATRE SEEKS
MULTI-RACIAL CAST FOR
POP OPERA "BARE"

Auditions for New Line Theatre's production of the pop opera BARE will be held on two successive Monday nights, March 14 and 21, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at the Washington University South Campus, 6501 Clayton Road (formerly CBC High School), just east of Big Bend, in the second floor theatre. This is not on the Washington University main campus. Performers need to come to only one of the dates. The show will run for four weeks, June 2-25, 2011. For details about the show, visit New Line's BARE webpage, at http://www.newlinetheatre.com/barepage.html

New Line is looking for a multi-racial cast of 15 actors. Twelve of the characters are high school students, but New Line will not cast anyone under 17. There are also roles for one adult man and two adult women. New Line is looking for intelligent singing actors who are willing to take risks onstage. Performers are asked to bring a prepared contemporary theatre song, preferably in rock or pop style, with printed piano music for our pianist (no tapes and no a cappella). There will not be a dance audition. Performers may also be asked to sing from the score.

No roles in the show have been pre-cast. All roles will be cast through the auditions.

ABOUT "BARE"

New Line's 20th Anniversary Season closes with the regional premiere of the cult phenomenon bare, a pop opera by up-and-coming theatre writers Jon Hartmere & Damon Intrabartolo. The show has been described as a mix of Rent and Dead Poets Society, exploring sex, sexuality, self expression, guilt, jealously, and religion, and all overflowing with the kind of urgency and intensity that comes with being 17. First produced in Los Angeles in 2000 and then off Broadway in 2004, this show has attracted a fierce cult following across the country and around the world. The New Liners are thrilled to bring it to St. Louis audiences for the first time.

bare follows five seniors at a Catholic boarding school. At the center are Jason and Peter, who are forced to deal with their mutual romantic attraction while trying to live up to the standards of their parents and the Catholic Church. The show explores the range of problems facing American youth today, from body image to teen pregnancy, from drug culture to adult expectations. The show's first director, Kristin Hanggan, said in an interview, "Its real allure for audiences is the commonality of experience -- alienation, fear of rejection, confusion of sexual identity and the poignancy of marginalization." In Los Angeles, bare won the L.A. Weekly Award for Best Musical, the Ovation Award for Best Musical and the L.A. Drama Critics Award for Best Score. When bare was originally produced in Los Angeles, it was supposed to run for 32 performances at an 87-seat theatre on Santa Monica Boulevard. Four months later, it had become a multi-award-winning sensation created by two 26-year-old writers and a 23-year-old director.

New Line Theatre will be one of the first companies in America to produce this exciting and powerful new pop musical.

No appointments are necessary. All performers should arrive for the audition before 7:00 p.m. New Line is a non-union, professional theatre company and is always very eager to find a multi-racial cast. Rehearsals will begin the first week of April, on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m., plus every night the week the show opens. Rehearsals are at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in St. Louis Hills. Performances are at the Washington University South Campus Theatre, 6501 Clayton Road. Performers will share a guaranteed 10% of box office receipts. Call 314-773-6526 or email info@NewLineTheatre.com for more information.

"I LOVE MY WIFE" EXPLORING THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION

NEW LINE OPENS ITS 20TH SEASON WITH THE ADULT JAZZ MUSICAL

ST. LOUIS, MO . . . The artists of New Line Theatre, "The Bad Boy of Musical Theatre," are very proud to announce the opening of the company's Twentieth Anniversary Season of provocative, adult, alternative musical theatre, with the hilarious Sexual Revolution jazz musical, I LOVE MY WIFE, running Sept. 30-October 23, 2010, at the Washington University South Campus Theatre (formerly CBC High School), 6501 Clayton Road, just east of Big Bend.

I LOVE MY WIFE is an intimate, little four-character concept musical, a naughty, wacky comedy about 1970s-era sex, love, romance, and wife-swapping, all set to a cool jazz score with songs like "Married Couple Seeks Married Couple," "Sexually Free," "By Threes," and the unashamedly romantic "I Love My Wife." It's a snapshot of two couples in 1977, toward the end of the Sexual Revolution, but it's also a character study of our country and our ongoing love-hate relationship with all things carnal. Hair announced the Sexual Revolution in full swing, and The Rocky Horror Show exposed its warts (no pun intended), but I Love My Wife shows us how it ended, not with a bang but with a whimper. The show explores the confusion of the Eisenhower generation -- too old to be hippies and too young to be old fogies -- as these would-be swingers sincerely attempt to try on the counterculture lifestyle, eventually leading all four into the same bed.

I Love My Wife boasts a great jazz score by Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity, City of Angels, Barnum, The Will Rogers Follies, The Life), and a smart, sly book and lyrics by Michael Stewart (Hello, Dolly, Barnum, Mack and Mabel), officially based on the French play Viens Chez-moi, J'Habite Chez une Copine (Come to My Place, I Live with My Girlfriend) by Luis Regio and Didier Kaminka, but the show really takes more (uncredited) inspiration from the iconic 1969 film Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice. For more info about the show, visit http://www.newlinetheatre.com/wifepage.html

The cast of New Line Theatre's production of I Love My Wife includes Sarah Armstrong (Monica), Emily Berry (Cleo), Todd Schaefer (Alvin), Jeffrey M. Wright (Wally), Zachary Allen Farmer (Harvey), Troy Turnipseed (Quentin), and Joel Hackbarth (Stanley). The show is directed by Scott Miller and Alison Helmer, with costumes by Thom Crain, scenic design by Todd Schaefer, and lighting by Kenneth Zinkl.

This production is part of the American Arts Experience festival, running October 1-17. More info about the festival is available at http://www.americanartsstl.org

New Line Theatre is a professional company dedicated to involving the people of the St. Louis region in the exploration and creation of daring, provocative, socially and politically relevant works of musical theatre. New Line was created back in 1991 at the vanguard of a new wave of nonprofit musical theatre just starting to take hold across the country. Miranda Lundskaer-Nielsen writes in her book Directors and the New Musical Drama, “After the pioneering efforts of theatre such as the Public Theater and Playwrights Horizons in New York, the idea of the serious nonprofit musical spread to theatres across America during the 1990s. While these shows met with varying levels of economic and critical success, the very existence of this alternative home for the art form began to redefine the musical, offering an alternative to both the traditional Broadway musical and the new West End shows. As the economics of the commercial theatre became increasingly forbidding, the nonprofit theatre became vital incubators for musical drama and nurtured a new generation of musical theatre writers.”

New Line has given birth to several world premiere musicals over the years and has brought back to life many shows that did not do well in their original New York productions. Altogether, New Line has produced 58 musicals and 5 concerts of theatre songs since 1991. New Line Theatre was recently given its own entry in the latest edition of the prestigious Cambridge Guide to American Theatre. New Line receives funding from the Regional Arts Commission, the Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation, and the Missouri Arts Council. For more about New Line, go to www.newlinetheatre.com/contact.html
